Why do we require Republican candidates to ignore science?

The United States has risen to wealth and prominence largely through the application of science. From automobiles to airplanes, spaceships to computers, America has long been known as the place where science is done and where innovation begins. And yet, apparently to be a viable candidate for President from the Republican Party, educated people must proclaim that they do not believe in evolution. What hope is there for our future when we proudly proclaim such ignorance?
