Why would a girl tell people you asked her out when you didn't (please answer)?

Ok, this sort of surprised me. There's this girl I know, and at one time a few guys that I know were pestering me to ask her out (she's gorgeous, and they all had girlfriends so they couldn't do it). Anyway, fast forward to a couple of days ago, I was talking to my friend about her and how one of my other friends was trying to get her to go out with him for years (that might be exaggerated) and I mentioned how the other guys had pestered me to do it. Then he said to me "Yeah, she told me you asked her out a few times." !?! The only thing was that I never asked her out once. So why the hell was she telling people I asked her out? Any ideas.
