Scalp giving off a gummy secretion? Is it normal?

Yesterday I noticed a brown gummy substance in the hat I was wearing. Today on my pillow there was a bit of secretion as well. And right now my scalp feels dry and aching. The secretion has a foul odor, like sulfur. Has this happened to anyone else and is it normal? How can I treat it and what should I do?
